Nuke Proof Warhead Stem and Bar - no lead required.

Posted: May 7, 2009

If you rode mountain bikes in the early to mid 90's, then you probably remember the carbon shell hubs from a small company named Nuke Proof. Times have changed that small company and thankfully they are no longer making those exact hubs, but have spread their wings a bit to create a whole component line up. From bars to rigid forks to headsets to non-carbon hubs and everything in between.

Here we want to show you the bar and stem combo that we put onto a recent build up...

Nuke Proof constructs their products with the same mindset as most other manufacturer's. Make it strong, make it light, make it comfortable, and make it serviceable. They have a good lineup of Freeride, and Downhill orientated parts, all with well thought out designs, and good features, while still being weight friendly.

The cockpit on our recent project bike has been built up using Nuke Proof's Warhead line up. It features the Warhead Stem, and the Warhead 760mm Bars. Both feature the same clean anodized black finish, and decal design, but we will break the features down one by one.

The Warhead stem is manufactured in 50,70,90, and 110mm lengths to cater to your cockpit needs. Designed around a 31.8mm handlebar clamp diameter, the Warhead stem is only offered in OS sizing. It has been cold forged out of high grade aluminum, then CNC machined to remove any unnecessary weight. It features opposing clamp bolts for even forces on the steer tube, and no hard "knee biting" edges, thankfully! The extension portion of the stem features micro fluting to help dissipate stress loads, and increase fatigue resistance.

It features a 4 bolt front clamp, with the Nuke Proof logo CNC machined into the front of it. The Warhead Stem weighs in at 203 grams for the 110mm version. The Warhead stem is only offered in Ano Black, and all the size options feature the same graphic layout.

The Warhead Bars are very comfortable with 9 degrees back sweep and 6 degrees up sweep. Machined to work with the Warhead stem (and all other 31.8mm clamping diameter stems), they feature a 31.8 clamping diameter, and are 760mm wide (30 inches) with incremented cutting marks. They are constructed out of 7075 Aluminum, that has a shot peened finish for fatigue resistance on that nice Ano Black finish. The Warhead bars are offered in 20mm (Low) and 38mm (High) rise, and we picked up the 38mm rise. The bars weighed in at 280grams (760mm width with 38mm rise) and feel pretty good in my hands and on the trail so far.

im running the bar stem combo on my M3 and they feel great... much the same feel as a lot of other big bars as they have the same geometry a lot of brands are using. stem has plenty of metal on it where it counts and everything elce is machined out, i'll probably put the stem on my jump bike when i bolt a pair of boxxers and direct stem on the M3. also the logos on the bars and the machined radioactive symbol on the stem look cool!

jagwire makes an assortment of colors. I don't know if they fit the same needs but they are pretty nice looking.

I've been rolling on a nuke proof generator hub for a few months now and I love it! It was super cheap, sounds good, rolls smoothly, has quality, and super stiff! What more could you ask for at only 140 bucks?
