Deity Vendetta Cranks

Mar 9, 2009 at 13:18
by Jordan Holmes
Recently I started the construction of my street bike for the year, and it has some unique features about it. One of which is a mid bottom bracket, meaning I was forced to use press in bottom bracket cups. This application limited me to BMX style cranks, however, doing a test on BMX cranks would not help you all mountain, freeride, and downhill riders out at all.

Deity has been slaving for 2.5 years on the Vendetta crankset, and after a few quick chats with Eric at Deity, I had my cranks picked out.

Click here for information on the Vendetta Crankset...Simply stated, the Vendetta Crankset is NOT a BMX crankset, Deity even states it on their site. Compatible with 68, 73, and 83mm bottom brackets, the Vendetta Crankset has a BMX style construction, but features everything a mountain biker would need, while still being applicable to BMX style bikes.

photo

After 2.5 years of designing, testing, and refining the Vendetta Crankset is finally ready. Deity's goal was to create one of the lightest cr-mo Cranksets on the market, that offered the deepest range of chainline adjustment, a must have for mountain bike riders. The 3 piece design uses a spindle, either cr-mo or titanium, and 2-170mm crank arms, the Vendetta cranks are as basic as it comes. Out of the box the Vendetta Crankset has installation instructions, bolts, spacers, dust caps, and even grease. They feature Deity's own home grown ABS Preload system, Bearing blowout spacers, and self extracting crankbolts. The Vendetta Crankset is all held together with 7075 T6 Hardware, to ensure a strong and sturdy hold.

photo

The installation instructions are dead easy, and if followed correctly guarantee a perfect installation. The instructions even include notes about using other features of the cranks, and the necessary steps to take to ensure they are correct. The final, and probably most strenuous step of installing 3 piece cranks is actually the easiest, which shows me that Deity has put some serious thought into this set up.

photo

While combining visual aesthetics along with a general knowledge base, the Vendetta cranks are extremely light. The kit I installed weighted in at 873 Grams with all the necessary parts, and the cr-mo spindle. Deity also has Titanium spindles available in limited quantity, which brings the kit weight down to 754 grams (119gram savings). Available in powder coated Black, Grey and White, the Vendetta cranks use Deity's 3 classic colors. While providing you with a very durable finish, Deity ensures the Vendetta crank set will last you with their very reasonable warranty. The Vendetta Crankset has a Lifetime Warranty on the Crank Arms, and spindle, and a 50% crash replacement program. As well, Deity ensures the Vendetta crankset has exceptional ankle clearance, and an extremely small stack height on the spline bosses.

photo

Simply put if you're in the market for strong, reliable, and unique cranks, take a peek at the Vendetta crankset. Not to many companies can ensure their cranks will fit on all your bikes, however, with Deity's system there is no reason why they wont.

Along with the Vendetta Crankset I also picked up a Termite 28 tooth sprocket from Deity. Seeing as the Termite 28 tooth sprocket was designed by the same company, there was no reason why it wouldn't work flawlessly. The Termite 28 tooth sprocket weighs 85 grams, and is machined out of 7075 T6 Aluminum as well. It was designed for single speed use, and features 6 mounting positions so you can keep your sprockets tooth wear to a minimum.

photo

The Termite 28 tooth sprocket is 6.35mm wide, and undergoes the same clear coating process as the cranks for increased durability. It is available in a 25 tooth as well, which weighs 70 grams. Seeing as the Vendetta Crankset works on all bikes, Deity also produced the Alibi 4B and the Alibi LT. The 4B was designed for use with chainguides and bash rings, while the LT was designed for use with e13 LG1, and MRP G2 guides.

photo

The Vendetta cranks can be purchased through any Deity retailer or from Deity's own online store, and they retail for $195USD. The Termite 28 tooth sprocket will run you $48USD. So next time you're in the market for some cranks, regardless of what bike you're running, check out Deity Components. They may have something you're looking for.

I was hoping there would be less Product advertising blogs on the home page because of the new product section.
  • 9 7
 here come the neg props
may i ask why you didnt run profiles ?
looks the same, brand has more prestige and light weight isnt everything
  • 8 9
yay more products for every little wannabe to put on there bikes cause it says diety on it....
  • 8 6
and by diety i man deity

This crankset is sturdy, light, eye-grabbing.. and backed by a great company. So why WOULDN'T you want this?
  • 6 2
I just got the vendetta and sprocket your advertising on here and the instructions aren't that good at all. None of the parts are really labeled very good. After there installed though they are amazing cranks. If only I could figure out why my chain is skipping.....
  • 6 3
Why is there so much advertisement allowed in the news section... When I click on these I expect a review of the product, what type of bike it went on and how he rode them and whether or not he liked them. Not a sugar-coated "buy this!"...
  • 5 3
dont think he's even rode them yet from the sounds of it
looks like a look at me and what parts i got / advert
sad news is little kids everywhere will be wanting a set of these profile copies
  • 7 4
Feds, We dont look at this is a sugar coated buy this story, simply addressing a product were going to be testing in the future. A lot of users refer to our site before purchasing something, so if we can let you guys know a bit of information about the item itself before a full test, you technically should get a better overall readers experience. This way we can keep all the technical mumbo jumbo out of the review, meaning it should consist of factual information.

Let's just say staying informed and being informed, like what spoiledgoods is doing to us, is the best for everyone.
  • 0 2
fortune: it doesnt matter about the cranks but you hace to get a diff hub that runs the opasit way
  • 1 0
we dont have time for your confusionism! haha
  • 2 3
Like said, they are just another knock off of profile cranks. Not that that is a bad thing because really, you can never have too much of a good thing. Its just a shame people whine about weight and don't run 4130 arms on their downhillers. I love my profile dj cranks. They will last 100 years.
  • 0 0
So what makes them MTB specific?
  • 2 2
Hmm.. another knock off? It could have been that designer-geniuses think alike...

And the Vendetta's are directed more to MTB's because they are more beefy and meant to fit the bigger bikes. For instance, it comes stock with euro-bb bottombrackets. 68, 73, or 83mm sets.
  • 2 2
So if these are stronger than BMX cranks, then that shouldn't classify them as "MTB specific" cranks, because mose MTB cranks are weaker than BMX cranks.

And there are quite a few BMX bikes that run euro BB's. And there are a few MTB's that run mid BB's. So the BB shouldnt be the thing that makes a difference.
  • 1 0
Just a guess. I don't know why they call it MTB specific. Maybe the 83mm bb width is a factor.
  • 4 2
theminsta, profile & hutch were the original 48 spline spindle using cromo crank arm. Everything after that is a knockoff... including these. Only the guys using lamer splines like poverty, redline etc using their small spline count spindles and some with pinch lock type ordeals to hold them on were original with their idea. In fact, profile just released for their 40th anniversary their original crank arm setup again. Its a reproduction of the original. Truly a classic because its what started it all... 4 decades ago.

And your comment, they are directed to mtb because they are more beefy is absolutely not even close to true. BMX takes the heavier duty parts being their is no suspension, or big wheels to help reduce shock from inpact. Bmx has stronger parts than mtb will ever have just because of the sheer abuse they see from a combination of things. 48 spoked wheels have no flex most of the time, and send shock from a hard landing right to the cranks, then the rider. Solid cranks are a good example of true street bmx cranks back when. & 7 or so lbs they rocked anything that stood in their way. That is not needed in mtb most of the time because of the other parts helping to relieve stress the cranks will see. For mtb wise, the strongest cranks made are the arms I have on my tomac. Profile dj arms which are the profile ss arms but with a normal spindle to allow for a euro bb being the ss spindle is so big, it would never be able to be utilized with such small bearings. it would make it pointless. The bearings would fail.

They are mtb specific cranks because thats the name they put on them. If they are using the same 48 spline setup everyone else is using they should work with a profile bb in a variety of bb types.

83mm would be the factor theminsta, but they most likely come with diff sizes being not all frames use 83mm and why limit themselves to certain bike brands. That would instantly reduce their possible sales.

none the less, not trying to take away from deity as I absolutely love the stuff they put out. I love my deity bars and they treat me well.

Their attention to detail is top notch. I recommend any deity product to anyone.

Only point I had is what I said. Their not originals other than the fact they have allowed better spacing for mtb which profiles don't. It was hard to get my chain line straight with my dj arms, but I did. Just took some fabbing of spacers to get it right. The deity's should be a install and don't worry about anything product so a+ in my book. Thanks for helping the progression of mtb deity... you rock!
  • 0 0
 i wouldent go there tbh
  • 1 0
Haha, k. I was just guessing back there. Props for that!
  • 1 1
Hutch cranks were made by profile along with powerlite, GT and possibly more. Profile cranks are available to fit any bike with any bb type.
  • 0 1
Why do you think I said they were both the originals. Hutch brand name, and profiles went to bring everything to what it is today. It wasn't just profiles brand that did it. Hutch's marketing helped. Anyways, glad some people around here know their riding history also. GT wasn't even thought of crank wise yet. GT cranks came at least 5 years after profile and hutch started doing their thing.
  • 0 1
and btw, yes profile did make the gt design up until the ultra box came out followed by gt's new crank design. They started doing their own thing 25-30 years later.
  • 0 1
and rlee560, thats what I have. You can see them on my bike now in my pics. Beef has hell. By far the strongest cranks ever made for mtb, and always will be, especially since mtb is in this gram crunching phase I doubt anyone else will try to top them, even in the urban scene.

and rlee560, gt started in the 70's, at least 2-5 years after profile. It was just hutch and profile in those days Big Grin

Look around on the profile site. Those 40th anniversary cranks are dope as hell. I want to run em on my bmx race bike just to make me feel like the old days. Looks kind of like the redline cranks but without pinch bolts.
  • 0 1
god I'm a spammer today. Yes profile cranks will fit any bike... even my tomac with its 6 7/8 spindle. The only issue on mtb is chain line. Its a lot harder to get a good chainline and run a reputable non custom chain guide with profiles. Deity fixed that.

I had to literally custom make my chain guide using a highly modified mrp boomerang, with my own rollers, and 2 sealed bearings. Of course one of my bearings is a lucky skateboard bearing to bring me luck Big Grin but the other is a ceramic bearing out of my old skateboard. Smooth as piss. The lucky just rides on the bash ring, but the ceramic actually works in keeping my chain in line. Perfection at its best Big Grin

curlxupxandxdle did.

haha now I see. Thats kind of a lamer comment for him to put. People think just because someone isn't airing huge gaps, doing tail whips and back flips they suck. Not everyone likes to risk their bod for riding. I sure can't most of the time. In dh racing I just pass by the jumps knowing I have work the following monday... but that doesn't say I'm not hard as hell on my parts either. Nothing wrong with buying the stuff you want for a bike as long as you actually ride it all the time. IMO the wannabes are the guys who buy this shit, and never ride their bike.
  • 1 0
True that. People need to get their shit straight! Salute
  • 11 4
I love how everyone treats a couple spacers, a longer spindle available as an accessory, and self-extracting bolts (as far as I could understand, that means that they have threads Razz ) as a huge innovation.

"This is NOT a BMX crankset" - as far as I can see, that's ALL it is, except with a slightly longer spindle for people with an 83mm BB. That's it. Nothing new, nothing super-special...

Stop buying into the hype.
  • 5 3
exactly! Just seems that deity is taking advantage of the people. Profile racing have been making similar cranks for years designed for mtb.
  • 3 1
 I could not agree more.
  • 2 2
but i don't think Profile offers that sweetass warranty. That becomes a HUGE factor when I purchase parts for my street bikes.
  • 4 1
Just because a company has alot of hype doesn't mean thats the only reason people are buying or because hey are the trendy thing to ride. I used to think the same way that people just bought deity for the looks and i doubted i would ever ride there products until i actually tried them, light, strong, lifetime warrenty, excellent engineering behind them. its just a bonus that they look great too. bottom line, if a company has a lot of hype, maybe its for a reason other than it makes your bike look cool
  • 4 3
There are many other cranks out there that are light, strong, and have excellent engineering. About the lifetime warranty, I can't say. But the reason a person would choose Deity over other cranks is, as I said, hype.
  • 3 1
Hype is someones personal grudge with a company, they often do not currently run or own their products. If you buy in with their advertising guess what, that's how this world works, companies have to get you to buy their products in order to run their business.

People say that Deity parts are trendy when in fact they are quality parts that has a passionate company backing them up. I'll take the "trendy" way if it includes quality parts at reasonable pricing with great custmer service anyday of the week. Props to Eric at Deity, keep up the great work!
  • 3 1
" Hype is not the truth, yet not quite lies. Hype is the overbearing promotion of some entity where the stated attributes, though marginally true, are not quite as stated."

I find this article to be absent of hype.
  • 5 1
One of the best companies out there, great products and great service. If you building a MTB with steel 3 peace cranks I would highly suggest the Deity's as they are made for a MTB not a BMX so they have all the proper spacers and spindle.
  • 5 1
For those that dont know a euro bmx bb is exactly the same as a standard mtb bb. Euro is normaly 68mm but can be spaced out to anything just like the deity set up. Deity is just taking advantage of the people that dont know this by branding these bmx cranks as mtb.
  • 2 1
well the Vendettas still outpimp most BMX cranks out there lol. If they came in 180mm option, i'd slap em on my BMX real quick
  • 4 0
what isn't sold on hype? if a product stands the test of time then a few more years from now these'll be looked on like other stuff. I'd try 'em on my MOB to race on a BMX track if they made longer arms...as far as taking advantage of people...people who don't ask questions and research maybe..like people who pay 5bucks for coffee...
  • 0 0
That's a good point! The other day I went down to Starbucks Cafe for an esspreso with milk and the gave me american coffe and a sachet of milk instead (like the were joking me). As I started to look at them in disbelieve, they charged me twice as much as they would've done at a proper Italian or Spanish cafeteria, where you can actually get the real stuff.
  • 2 0
i guess if they made 180s it would be a BMX crank then! Oh well, still like the looks of them.
  • 2 1
Thats a good point but what i was really getting at is that you can buy better and cheaper cranks out there if you look at bmx ones. Fly, mcneil conjoined, profile racing and oddysey all make very good cranks at competitive prices.
  • 2 0
I run profiles on my Standard cruiser forever and on a Slingshot one season! (that's some OS shite for you younger viewers!) Profiles are deathproof.
  • 0 0
no, not deathproof. I have 4 arms I destroyed. 1 set on my standard bmx, the other on my tomac. I ovalized the part where it fits on the splines. Profile ss and dj arms are deathproof... the race and mtb by far aren't. They will give you new ones no questions asked. I just like to keep my broken stuff as memories and step it up the next time around. My cranks add a ton of weight to my bike, but I can ride them for as long as I'm on this earth and they will just need to have the bearings replaced every decade or so. Screw aluminum cranks. Idk how many times I stripped pedal threads or splines with hard landings even with 8inches of suspension. That is what sucks.
  • 5 2
They don't really design their products. What Deity does is source standard products in China and put their name down on it. EL Gallo, from Spain, or Superstar, from this country, do the same kind of thing. They all buy from the same manufacturer and put their coumpany name down on it. Please don't prop me down before checking online what I am saying.
  • 3 0
I believe they at least still design their stuff but get it made in Taiwan. The amount of taiwanese products that are just rebranded is ridiculous, specially saddles and pedals. Those jump saddles that all "legit rider owned" companies sell are all the same shit but with diferent price and graphics. You can buy one from the mall-store brand for $10, or get deity's for $43.
  • 1 1
Well, I mean, this is precisely what I am going on about. I could've bought some Decoy pedals for my Slayer SXC, but in the end I just got Superstar's due to the fact they're just the same. I mean, it is true if you come to think of it. Same weight, same geometrics, same all but the name, so why to pay more if "it is not the hype" but "quality" what you are after? Just don't buy into the hype.

Nice write up Jordan. Deity is a rad company, and Eric is a cool guy who I am stoked for them to be apart of my jam!
  • 2 0
These are such good cranks... I've been running them for 6 months and they're still so so smooth. They look so nice on my bike and are so strong, and light too. Their service too is second to none. Eric, the owner of the company is so personable and will have a chat with anyone, even a regular joe from Oz like me. Through his great advice i procured the best cranks i've ever run.
  • 1 0
i agree 100% i was a little unsure about what i wanted and did a lot of researching on what i wanted to spend my hard earned money on. I looked around and i couldnt find anything i really liked and then i found these. I emailed Deity and got a response from Mike Montgomery and after a few emails i had decided these were the cranks for me. Paid for them and they got here quickly. Installed them. No complaints what so ever
  • 2 0
Well, as an owner of a deity crankset myself, i give it a good rating, it's a strong crank, that you need not to worry if it break or anything, it soild.. very smooth and i can trust it, its true tho, it has the bmx style of a crank, and its very nice to have in a hardtail, the crank is able to use in bmx, hardtail, and DH bikes.. ive never had a problem with this crank at all, what making it smooth as it is, is the design of the cup with 2 sealed bearing in each one, like when i pedal, im never fighting it at all, it almost as if it isnt there, ive trust this crank alot and put it through alot, its been able to handle it all.. i highly recomend this crankset to ppl who are interested
  • 1 0
i have 08 grey vendetta on my nemesis, and soon to be put on my new rune frame. deity does operate on hype to some degree, however their parts are solid. i have deity cranks, handlebar, seat, and front ring on my bike and i wouldnt complain about any of them. these cranks are nice and stiff, looks cool, and you can depend on them in any situation.
  • 8 5
Also, 95% of this write up is taken directly from the Deity website. Basically, pure advertising, like most of the news on the front page is.
  • 2 1
i will say the service was excellemt, the design and install was simple. they look sharp too. but the bearings were not made for the rigors of northwest riding, and i blew threw them in 3 short months of really gettting after it riding. that was a let dowm, because i thought they would be bombproof. i've had race face and shimano bottom brackets last sooooo much longer and go in and OUT much easier. the real challenge of these cranks is taking them out. I pity the fool... i ride saint again, cause it aint broke and its not that heavy and looks sharp too, and lasts about a million times longer!
  • 4 0
now put em in the product section!!!!!!!!!!!
  • 0 0
i know i'm going to sound an idiot here. I've got a DMR rythum, i think it's 06. it has a big BB shell, will these fit? i've been toying with these for a while now.
i know they'll fit euro BMX BB, but mine is bigger than that. Frown
  • 0 0
I work at a bike shop, although most of their products seem to be top notch I ordered a set of these cranks for my bike and when we got them both arms had unfinished threads so they had to be re tapped to work properly. The cranks also didn't come with stickers. Over all great cranks but I feel that a small company like this shouldn't have any major problems like unfinished threads.
  • 4 0
Deity.. one brand that needs more exposure on Pinkbike...
  • 0 1
I wouldn't say they NEED it but it WOULD be kool
  • 1 0
i have been using deity cranks for over a year now, i liked them so much that i bought another set for my other bike. look good, feel very solid and deity has the best customer service that i have come across.
  • 4 4
You guys that are flaming this company are mistaken. As mentioned in this, Eric(the owner of Deity) will deal with you directly and provides the best customer service in the business bar none. Customer service is what the mtb industry lacks big time. Bike manufactures making you go through your LBS just to get any factory parts?! Get real!

You won't find any of that with Deity parts, they will deal with you directly and fairly. Also, people that flame their prices.....the deity pedals are 15 bucks cheaper than the same ones made by premium bmx products.

People say that Deity parts are trendy when in fact they are quality parts that has a passionate company backing them up. I'll take the "trendy" way if it includes quality parts at reasonable pricing with great custmer service anyday of the week. Props to Eric at Deity, keep up the great work!

be right back, im going to purchase these
  • 1 0
i think im gunna buy some for my bmx....they did say even though they are mtb cranks they still would work right?
  • 3 2
yh but there are loads of better bmx cranks for less money!
  • 1 0
yeah but this way im still sportin' mtbing, and the warrenty is nice if something were to happen.
  • 1 1
Sorry for the 3rd comment people, but how are they loads better than bmx cranks? Last I saw profile still had the best warrenty in the industry, and the best rep for products not breaking and lasting 10, 20, 30, and a few even 40 years. Its all the same idea. 48 spline chromoly cranks. Not much you can change except warrenty.
  • 1 0
is this freeride/all mountain capable with the right rings? i mean its lighter than holzfeller if im right and CROMO!!
  • 0 0
Premium Slims, Deity, Macneil Slipless, Kona's and a few other companies all have the EXACT same design from the exact same manufacture. Just choose the cheapest!

Does anyone have these for sale?
  • 1 0
those are sick! i wish they offered them in a variety of colors
  • 0 1
the colors wear off quick anyways. My black profile cranks pain rubbed off in a matter of weeks. Just get chrome... nothing to wear off. no rust. no bs.
  • 3 3
i like deity cranks. but for $170.00 you can get redlines which might even be better then this with a bb asell
  • 0 0
Vandetta comes with BB and everything necessary.
  • 0 0
my question is do they make a 100+mm spindle? Will these fit profile spindles if they don't make one that big?
  • 1 1
Man these are the best cranks in the world.. i have a set and love them alot!!

i just picked up a set of these today. Can't wait till they're on my bike!
  • 0 0
what bash guard would be compatible with that combo?
  • 3 3
 my deity alway come loose
  • 5 2
you must not have them fitted properly then
  • 0 1
they came loose because you probably didn't have the right spacer btw the bearings. Without a perfect fit spacer, you will either loosen up all the time, or have to crank em tight making them hard to spin from the load you put on the bearings. I have to tighten up my profiles every time I ride. just how bmx type cranks work. If you don't like tightening get some blue lock tight and stop bitching! lock tite and be done with it. Don't use red lock tite because every time you ride in the rain you need to dry em off being they aren't aluminum and will rust.... very very fast.
  • 0 0
i wasnt having a bitch i just said the come loose i do use the right spacing
  • 0 0
and anyway they dont come loose anymore cuz some asshole stole my bike
