Konaworld - Episode #4 - Built To Last

Posted: Jan 8, 2009

Source: Kona Bikes

In The Latest Installment of Kona's Dr. Dew Files The Doctor Is On A Mission To Hunt Down Old Konas

The Doctor is at it again. This time he pounds the pavement and trails in search of old Konas that have stood the test of time. Kona's enigmatic chief bike designer Doug Lafavor loves a bike that lasts forever, and it doesn’t take him long to find 18-year-old Kona bicycles still making their owners happy as clams.

Rolling around urban and wild areas in camo and blaze orange, the Doctor sniffs out bike after bike from a Dawg Primo to early '90s Cinder Cone in the Dr. Dew Files fourth installment - Built To Last. With the Kona bike owners singing praises about their timeless rigs, it's only a matter of time before the "Lame Ducks" out there get themselves a nice ride too. You'll understand once you see it.

So, waste not time, head over to www.konaworld.tv and click the Dew Files tab to see the Doctor at work. That Dawg will hunt!

Enjoy!

I also love Kona. As you can see I exchange ma 2006 V-10 into Stab Supreme Fabien Barel Edition and I am happy about that. For me it is like Kalashnikov, very simple but working very gooooooooooood Smile

ok, i don't have anything against konas, but here was a comment something like this "built to last" and a link at pinkbike whit a broken kona, and it's deleted, and wanted to know the reason why? cuz pinkbike is run by those major corporations in the bike industry which don't like the "negative" commercials? they should work and make the designs even better when they see something like this, and it's a shame pinkbike that you deleted the comment! it's a huge disappointment for me that you try to manipulate the viewers like this! what next delete the pictures too?and i have to say again i don't have anything at all against konas and yes everything is breakable!maybe i get my account deleted or something but i just had to say this.

Konas might have bin great from beginning of free ride and Downhill Mountain biking till about 2003, even though… nvm lol. But unfortunately they obviously lost there CAD program because the design has staid the same! And I would not say that it is perfected for performance at all.
”One thing I love about high school girls, I get older…. They stay the same!” unfortunately I cant say the same about bikes.

As you've posted twice does that mean its gonna take you 2 runs to break it or just the one. Also 5 pieces is a bit ambitious i think just claiming you would break it is a more realistic goal.

On the issue of Kona Quality.....

Just look at the demographic of persons buying and riding Kona's...
They are very diverse, but alot are wreckless riders that feel the best display of skill is "going big", and riding drops to flat... Kona is well marketed towards these individuals as it is seen as a cool brand that is affordable... Do you see any punk like riders riding Santacruz??? Intense??? Devinci??? Giant!!! Well some yes, but essentially NO... As these rigs are out of reach for most inexperienced riders.... So they get a stinky, ride it like they think they are smooth and presto... They then appear to have issues when others dont... Bottom line, there are more Konas out there being ridden into the ground and in a super crap fashion than Santacruz, Intense, Devinci, Giant and Specialized... Thats because of marketing not a faulty build or quality...!!!
I have had 2 konas in my lifetime, and no issues with the build of the bike just components... Kona's are solid... Thats the facts...

I agree 100%... More Kona's are ridden by more riders that suckand a lot of those kiddies beating on Kona's have no clue how to keep up routine maintainence on a bike. Then, their ride goes to crap and they start bagging on Kona's like a bunch of ruddy jackasses. Even then though, I suck and not too consistant with routine maintainence and mine's held up great. Got an '06 Stinky Supreme that's been from Utah to Mammoth and never bitched about any of it. With my fat ass riding that thing day in and day out (SoCal has no Winter!!!), I dont how some of these 150lb kids can break 'em.

People mostly hate Konas because they're beginner bikes that are relatively heavy and just don't have the same feel as other brands

flag tossedsalad (Jan 10, 2009 at 13:25)
Its true, after some kid/guy upgrades from a Walmart bike they usually end up getting a Kona, proceed to learn how to ride it by destroying it, and then move on to a more expensive bike brand (or give up riding). The reason the more expensive bikes don't break isn't because they are any stronger, its just that the dude has already crashed and burned enough times on a kona that he isn't going to repeat the process on the replacement.

Is there the same hate-on for Norcos? They're probably the 'go to' bike for a guy as much as a kona is.

On the issue of Kona Quality....

I am not an inexperienced, wreckless rider that rides my bikes into the ground. I was having a fun, chilled days riding at fort william when my bike snapped. I dont think that if i was riding a santacruz or intense then the same thing would have happened, it was a fault in the frame and therefore konas fault for making products that they say are for downhill when they obviously arent up to the job and thats the reason i would never buy one again.

flag almightybenners (Jan 11, 2009 at 14:02)
Where did the frame snap? And how can you tell that a Santa cruz or intense frame wouldn't snap? People do snap them still they're not immortal and seeing how intense's dh bikes are 'for race only' and are only designed to last a couple of seasons racing I'd be more worried about that and for the record specializeds demo 8 and 9 had a problem with headtube welding that was recognized by spesh so it's not just Kona who have build problems

flag rbkonafreerider (Jan 12, 2009 at 12:50)
at the headtube. thats another thing, i wouldnt buy a demo either purely because they snap, maybe theyve sorted it out but i dont know, all i do know is that i would never buy one and put myself at risk again. i also know that santacruz are handbuilt in america, i dont see any konas that have that quality. all im saying is that i wouldnt want to buy a bike that is likely to snap on me whilst im riding, and im sorry but konas fall into that category.

I've seen issues with the Full suspensions. The hardtails can usually take a beating. Or the old school steal frames, those were wild.

Kona bikes are not horrible, they do the job and are reasonably priced. However, that position worked well a few years ago, but now since the industry has really taken off, it seems that Kona along with some other companies were left in dust. They have not innovated in any way that shows that they are truly trying to improve their products to stay competitive in the market. Norco was also stuck in this position for a while, but recently they have made quite a bit of effort to improve their products while still maintaining good pricing. Now recently with the costs of good increasing, and the slump in the economy, many companies were forced to re-assess their products in order to stay competitive. In the cycling industry there were really only two choices; either cut quality to keep the prices the same, or increase prices slightly to maintain the same quality. While some companies like Specialized chose the latter and were forced to increase prices slightly to continue to produce the same caliber of product. Instead, Kona decided to cut costs and produce an inferior product. To the un-informed consumer, a Kona bike seems to be a better deal, the price is still cheap, and it still appears to be a good product. As a bike shop employee for many years, I have seen many bikes come through our doors, and since 2002 when we became a Kona dealer, I have seen next to no improvement in the product, and I have seen a decline in the quality and spec of their bikes. One of the best examples is their tubesets, their high-end frames used to be made from Easton RAD or easton Scandium tubesets, but they have no switched to a "Kona" tubeset or a "Kona Scandium" tubeset. And yet they are still charging the same amount of money for the bikes. For 2009 they have also started to use more and more house brand components, including stems, seatpost, and bars. Now this isn't always a bad thing, many other companies have done this in order to cut costs, but the products that Kona is putting out are of inferior quality, a quite honestly don't look very good either. I have nothing personal against Kona, I have unfortunately owned 2 of their bikes in the past when I first started riding. There are other issues I could go on about, but in my opinion Kona is a brand that has lost their way, and really need an infusion of ideas in order to become respected within the industry. It is unfortunate that there are still people that believe that Kona bikes are good, because in many respects they are only a few steps away from being in the gutter with Schwinn.

Yeah ive had 4 Konas and they have all been great bikes, although i have witnessed them snapping, many due to people usuing wrong size forks and there-so claiming that the frame was crap, when really it was there own fault.

I fully agree with you gays. The reason Kona is loosing that people who did not really test it are catching the marketing slogans. VPP is the best, DW-Link is the best, no no no, Maestro is even better of the best bla bla bla.
The products are very, very good but only because they look more less the same people think there was no innovaton and no progress. And there was and is. Hudge!!!!
The bikes are different and better every year and at least as good as top other brands like Santa or Iron and Turner.
But that how "we" are so Kona must implement new suspension design to get beack on truck even though the system will not be better but......NEW.
