Kona Millionth Bike Won

Posted: Nov 11, 2008

Winner, winner, chicken dinner ... or a new Kona Cinder Cone.

After months of tracking the production progress - from start to finish - of the Kona Bicycle Company's One Millionth Bike, Shelly Girlatz of Balzac, Alberta, Canada is the winner and proud new owner of a 2009 Cinder Cone mountain bike. The celebratory contest tracked the day-to-day life of Kona's millionth bike from its production overseas to its random shipment to Calgary, Alberta. The bike was tracked using GPS inserted into the seat tube of the Cinder Cone, among other ways.

Wednesday October 22 was just like any other day for Shelly, until she walked through the doors of Bow Cycle in Calgary, Alberta - who were having a huge store wide sale. Looking for a new Kona rig to saddle-up on, Shelly walked the floors with the helpful and knowledgeable staff until the glowing graphics, RockShox front fork and comfy WTB sport saddle of the Cinder Cone stopped her in her tracks. Little did she know, she was staring at Kona's millionth bike.

In 1988, when Kona officially entered the bike industry, the Cinder Code was the first bike to roll off the assembly line. Since ’88, about 77,115 Cinder Cones have been produced, making it Kona’s number one produced bike. Hence the reason it’s the millionth.

Shelly kicked the tires, gave the Cinder Cone the once over and then took it for a quick spin around the shop. She fell in love. When she made the decision to buy the bike, the party started. Shop staff, Kona's Canada Sales manager Dik Cox and Kona sales representative Lisa O'Daly instantly broke the exciting news to Shelly about the millionth bike contest. Amazed, shocked and stoked, Shelly cruised out of Bow Cycle and into the sunset on a free, new Kona Cinder Cone.

Congrats Shelly!

ianjohnbressat, you are an idiot. if you think that the stuff on the boat is worth more than the boat itself, you need to get your head checked. those boats run for about 30,000,000$ CAN. and the stuff on the boat, is probably worth 8,000,000 tops. think before you speak man.

i think it would have been better to make like a special edition one. even if nobody wins it. like a replica of the first one with modern parts. kind of like what Specialized did with the Stump Jumper in 2007.

she can have fun with that fork though. it SUCKS!

like that has anything to do with it! the way the articles written is like a press release for the cinder cone and Bow Cycles "Shelly walked the floors with the helpful and knowledgeable staff until the glowing graphics, RockShox front fork and comfy WTB sport saddle of the Cinder Cone stopped her in her tracks". Im just gonna put it out there but i dont think it was chance that it ended up at bow cycles...

i agree with Dirt i don't think it was random it ended up at Bow cycles.... "Bow Cycle happens to be the largest seller of Kona bicycles in the world" from the kona one in a million web site. but whatever grats to the hoty on a new free bike.

Their crazy millionth bike giveaway was a shitty ass Cinder Cone? Whoop-de-doo!

flag rstwosix (Nov 12, 2008 at 2:56)
It maybe a shitty ass Cinder Cone to you - but over 70,000 customers didn't think so. Most people just like Shelly Girlatz want a decent quality standard hardtail to ride around on. She must be over the moon she got the millionth bike free.

the cinder cone IS a very good XC bike, its light and handles really well. you dont have to be a kona owner to like konas, after all they are pretty damn good bikes, comfy and handles really good

lol, indeed...though my oldschool cindercone from '94 is still my favourite frame to go razzing around the singletrack on. (spec has definitely gone down over the years...mine came with xt groupset, pace cranks...) c'mon Kona, sort it out.

flag AmirB (Nov 12, 2008 at 4:58)
i meant it has a good frame, it can handle a 130mm fork and can be a good AM bike, especially the 2006 wich already came with a light AM wheelset

I've not been keen on them since they went over to aluminium frames. Not denying it's good, just not for me (though I'd certainly not be disappointed if I'd won one), and I think it's time Kona started up-spec'ing again. Congratulations to Shelly, hope you enjoy the new bike Big Grin

haha yeah. however, most kids on this site, worked their asses off to pay for their own bikes. i worked 2 years for my shore with all the parts, and i'm still working to buy my new street bike. honestly, don't just assume that all kids get shit bought for them by "mommy and daddy"

Deleting comments to make the promotion look better - and there was me thinking pink bike was a bike riders community for bike riders - guess greed gets to everyone!

You can say that about anything connected to the human race.

Deleting severely negative comments is fair play as folks are simply spouting off about something they are not really looking at properly. Yes it is a promotion, but to them it's a big deal to give away that bike as the millionth as it was also the first. It has nostalgic reasons to give away that particular bike.

some people may have reasons for doing so, for example waiting 5 months longer than expected for a new frame... because someone at Kona have sent it to the wrong country... not to mention they grew up so big in the freeride market just because of the NWD series... and one article won't change their opinion of "highend wannabe" bikes.

Upon Cinder Cone's humble shoulders were epic Kona bikes built. Stinky, Stab, Coilers etc. can all trace their lineage to the bike that helped carry Kona in the early days. Happy Millionth, Kona. Now please send me a bike at P.O. Box.....

here's for ''s-m-a'' ..what a stupid thing to say, if you seriously think kona even comes close to any of the top brands who make there own frames, ya thats right, then your very very sadly mistaken
