Draw a photo of Steve Peat
by spoiledgoods

Nowadays there is a very very thin line between real and fake, often it's to close to call. Computers have turned this line into something that is almost impossible to notice to the untrained eye. Recently I saw a photo on Pinkbike that blew my mind, so I am here to share with you guys something very unique, and something I haven't seen before.
Read on to see a very unique perspective on Steve Peat...
Read on to see a very unique perspective on Steve Peat...
Recently I was cruising the site and noticed a very unique photo of Santa Cruz Syndicate rider and all around pinner, Steve Peat. He was pinning it at the Sea Otter Classic, the first "race" of the season. It's basically a big show boat scene as no one earns any points from the race, simply bragging rights.
So what grabbed me about this photo?
Besides the fact as I had a feeling that the upload'ee didn't own the photo, I clicked on it to find that it was actually a painting done of a photo, of Steve Peat! How weird is that, someone did a painting on a computer. I was under the impression that painting was a lost art that older people did in their spare time, but no, I was incorrect.
The original photo was taken by Dave Pawlak, a freelance photographer who just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Here is the Original Image
Now, after 8 Hours of work, a user by the name of ciaffez has remade this image, but as a painting. Using a basic program called Corel Photopaint, he has remade this image in a very professional manner, from scratch! That's right, he started with a blank canvas. He even went through the painstaking process of filming himself making the painting.
Here is the Created Image
Here is the video he made of himself doing it. He doesn't have any commentary as 8 hours of someone talking would be excessive, however if you guys can figure it out from this 6 minute video "How to" do it, by all means get it done.
Congrats to ciaffez for his unique painting. It's a super cool look and I hope we see some more of these photos popping up, but be sure to get the permission of the original photographers before using their hard work.
Thanks for reading,
SpoiledGoods.

That was long but super sick....!
Hats from heads everybody. Though it was quite long, I didn't felt that - all time was sitting with my mouth wide opened... sick, full respect to you.
That takes some serious patience! I have a go at it about a minute and it pisses me off so much! Fair play!
haha, when my page loaded, the actual picture didnt load right away so the painting was the first thing i saw so i started scrolling down trying to find the painting only to go back to the top and see that the first "picture" i looked at was actually the painting!! great job!
Wow. I'm speechless. That is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. I use photoshop myself, and can hardly beleive this possible. But through watching the video, I'm in awe. serious props.
watched it all and that was insane. must take alot of skill to do that and patience aswell. very well done mate.
The first is a photo. The second is a digital painting. Duh.
It takes crazy skill to do something like this in Photoshop, whereas taking a photo like that is relatively easy in comparison.
Major props to ciaffez for doing this.

yeah, wow it takes a lot of skill. But if the original looks better, don't say the edited is better just because it took skill. The original does look better imho.
BUT. You can't directly compare one with the other and say one is better as they are two completely different and seperate mediums.
It's like comparing a magazine against a video, it's like saying "NWD is better than MBUK." You can't say it, as they're just completely different.

Nice post and video defo help someone new to it, but to be honest "I" perfer the original, not a big fan of manipulated photos like that, makes them seem unnatural. But props on the effort
Thanks for comments but please don't call it a fake! It's a drawing/painting whatever but not a fake.. If you saw somebody's face and then a picture of their face would you call it a fake? My purpose with drawing this was only some practice, and, as i was quite happy with the result, i decided to post in on internet, but i honestly regret this now cos people think i wanted to fake something. It's just a drawing. Pro artists always have reference when they draw/sculpt something realistic - sometimes it's the real thing they (e.g. a model) sometimes - a picture (and that's the option i chose).
Point well made for me.
I wondered what the point was duplicating another art form.
But as you say every artist needs a point of reference.
Great Skills anyway never doubted that.
Cause plenty of debate

all those calling it a fake havent realized its not just another photoshop image manipulation, shame on them for not bothering to read the blog before commenting!
that pciture is truly awesome! and all professional artists who want to earn money from their skill paint pictures using photos, maybe not all the time, but its what happens... so get over it and stop calling it a fake; in no way whatsoever is it a fake!

Truthfully ciaffez, anyone who doesn't understand and appreciate what is in front of them is an ignorant lout and you need not associate nor bother yourself with such idiots. Rock on my friend, I hope to see more from you in the future!
that picture is seriously amazing, i don't even think i would've had the patience to do that. massive props to the artist.
That's pretty impressive, lots of good work! However as in all photo editing or digital painting, things are not what they seem to be and the author found a way to hide the original background layer while making the vid. A background layer which is an original pic that he was painting on as on calque
Ban me from PB if I'm wrong
Still my comment shouldn't take any credit from author's job as it is impressive and shows the dark side of photography and graphics! PROPS!!!
Since i've just been provoked...
Primo: Where did you see a backround layer? in the video? cos i certainly don't remeber usig what you called a 'calque'.
Secundo: If you resize both pictures to same size and compare them you will notice that many elements of the picture are not exactly same - cos it's veeeeery difficult (if at all possible) even for pro artists to draw/paint elements of EXACTLY same size, angle etc... IF i used a backroud layer with original picture it would be easy to get every bit right.
Tertio: If I wated to use a background picture do you really think i would bother spending few hours trying to draw the 'skeleton' and get the basic lines and contours and silhouette right, b4 i even strated putting any colour on? that would be a complete waste of time. Or would I bother to get the shape of Boxxer right (took me over and hour) - I could just use the 'backgroud picture' and it would be perfect! (BTW it came out a bit small i think)
Quarto:EVEN IF i wanted to use a background picture i would only get the silhouette, and u can't use a 'calque' to do shading, highlights etc.
Quinto: whatever you think I know that I made this picture from scratch and there was no 'cheating' involved.
And last but not least: "Nie sadz innych wedlyg siebie!" ..Don't judge others by your own actions, mate!

Take it easy... Im just a simple architect/visualization artist that opened photoshop a few times... i did not wanted to insult U in any way, sorry if i did... some artists are fragile... architects hear som much sh*t all the time, we're too used to that to bother. I was uber positive before U answered, now I'm stoked. Honours, honours honours... my forehead touches the ground - really. Did U use cintiq or just a tablet?
and secundo: regarding judging others U hit the point, as a architectural viz lier, i see nothing wrong with cheating by putting the pic on lower layer... as long as it looks good, as long as it looks stunning - a 0.001% of the world cares...
and tertio: as a poor viz artist and cheater I can say that if U want something cheated look real, make it dirty and make it a bit unperfect, that's why i.e. when making a 3d car model, I make small changes in the sheet divisions after modelling is done and I move vertices to make a minimal unperfections in sheet surface. Thats what made me think U just moved aside the logos and stuff. And before I wrote this comment I did put both images on top... respect and peace!
ciaffez i dont believe you are being too sensitive, too many people dont aprechiate digital art properly simply because its digital, the fact that some of these people are talking about "photoshop" clearly shows they dont know what they are talking about or have bothered reading the description, as corel photopaint is very differnt.
everyone just needs to take a little more time to understand eachother, instead of seeing a photo and jumping in shoutign "photoshop" and "you cheated"
do you have a deviant art account?
oh and i forgot to mention the most important thing, that this digital art is spectacular and ild love to see more work

PPL don't appreciate digart, they usually don't appreciate any art, just deal with it. I will never agree to the fact that using layers as calque is "cheating", it's like saying to oil painter that painted a whole 2x2m painting with a 2mm brush that he's indeed a great one cuz he didn't cheat by using wider brushes - everybody can do that with wide ones!. If ciafezz wanted to try himself without the background with that result i can only say congratulations, astonishing job, U must have learned a lot by doing it! At the base of graphical use of computer lies one thing: achieve best possible result with least time and least means, for holistic artists, the modern world invented the overhours
.
Whether it is Corel Photopaint or Photoshop or SketchBook it is only the result that matters, as long as copyright stealing or dead bodies are not involved.
ciafezz - do U use Cintiq screen or tablet?

BTW... it's saturday night I'm at work cuz I believe that windows with frames in 3d model I'm working on should be 3d not just flat textures, and balcony rails should be 3d rails... because I believe in something and I appreciate art
I don't hink my boss does

Is there some kind of 'cloning' tool used to interoperate details from the original photo as there is ridiculous detail in that all at the correct angles etc? Awesome talent to the man, nice work!!
That looks damn hard, I wouldn't have the patience to do that.
It is cool but why don't you do an original picture?

Incredible. Simply the most amazing thing ive seen in a while. Fantastic detail. Very well done to you.
That was amazing. Thanks for taking the time to finish this masterpeice and give the rest of us an insite into how you did it. great job
Amazing piece of work. Time and skill in one art product are unbelievably good. But realy what is the point. One photographer with an eye for composure has taken a beautiful photo in a second. This other guy has spent 8 hours of his life copying it.
No artistic value for me too much time on his hands.
You would surely have to be into bikes to make such an effort
time better spent riding.

Coming from an Art Director/Illustrator, yes you have talent. But like some of the others who have already posted have said, there's zero creativity here. It would have been more interesting to have seen it done on a real canvas in actual paint or at the very least had some original style. You're a creative guy...so I suspect that the rest of your work is more interesting.
who cares about "creativity", it's still an amazing "painting". Are painters creative when they paint portraits? Debatable, but I would think the level of creativity would be comparable to recreating a photo. Plus, the whole issue about which, real vs. digital, takes more talent, is a big can of worms. I used to think musicians working synthetically were hacks compared to people playing "real" instruments, but my views have changed somewhat, and I now see that the two skillsets can't be compared because they are so different, and that each different medium requires a talent of it's own.
My comment had nothing to do with which is better...digital or art on a physical canvas. I was simply stating that reproducing a photo by re-drawing using Corel isn't ground breaking creativity. A talented eye...yes, creative...no. As for all painters/artists being creative... The ones who ARE creative are the ones who are successful when it comes to making it a career.
If you want to use the music analogy again... Look at bands vs cover bands. Not a lot of cover bands that pack stadiums and sell $80 tickets.
*To clarify again... I never said that the illustration that ciafez did was poor. He's got a great eye for detail and has some talent.

Just that you mentioned it would have been more interesting on canvas......
Plus, I just like to debate for fun

you forgot the people in the background! But man that was very impressive and boy you have some skills.
If its drawn from scratch why does it look like a photoshop of the original? They're identical..... If you put one over the other all the lines would match up...
lol Neily03 cant even see things properly
man ciaffez i hate the amount of idiots commenting on your work, its bottom line fantastic, i use corel paintshop pro X2, and have painter, but dunno how to use it, but i do know how to apreciate it unlike some people, who clearly have never seen reall or tallented art before

is no one actualy reading the blog as well as looking at the pictures? becuase if all the people who have said, fake, just a photoshop filter etc. had bother to either read the blog or watch the video they would know what they said was fecking stupid. lol id be embarrased if i was one of them...
its because its a complete regeneration of an existing photograph, that is amazing though! great article

A real photo manipulator would have used Adobe Photoshop. I wouldnt call that photo fake, its just manipulated with filters, clone and close crop tools. There is no creativity, its just allowing the software to make some changes for you. Any good photographer would have taken that photo using depth of field to achieve that effect without looking like it was airbrushed and cloned to hell.
95% of any photos you see in the magazines are touched up in PhotoShop. They aren't fake, they are just modified to clean up the image and make them more print worthy.
As a creative director/designer and PhotoShop professional of over 15 years I know what goes into each and every photo. Sorry if this sounds negative but the final image produced is crap and riddled problems because of amateur skills.
That's my opinion!

If you would watch the video, you would see it is a DRAWING from a blank canvas.
It is NOT a photo manipulation. Photoshop was not used to add effects/filters to the original photo.
Corel Draw was used to draw this from scratch.
Perhaps you should end your 15 year career and go work at gas pump.

eganix you should step down off your high horse and read the actual article and watch the video before you totally rip apart someones work. ciaffez excellent work. artists are doing pretty cool stuff with computer art these days.
im also surprized that someone in this line of work isn't aware that people have been creating "original" art that is very good for a long time using corel and ps.
Impressive!!! That hasta take loads of patience to do something like that!.. You thought of nearly everything down to the last little detail like company logos and whatnot.
That takes skillz and you got that man!

Wow really impressive man you have some serious skills! Not many people can do this. Make sure you make good use of your skill and patience to get some good $$$ in product development or other.
nice edit!, this is what i like to do is edit pictures to enhance them or change it to look a little better
That is amazing you could easily turn that into a career. With the original photographers permission it would be awesome to get that painting as POD.
WOW. I give him mad respect. I'm in Digital Multimedia Technology and he makes me want to drop the course now cus i'm not worthy anymore haha.jeeez.

I can't believe this guy has to defend his piece of art! Are you all completely retarded?!! Watch the video; he DREW it on a blank, white screen!
You have amazing talent. I believe this is creative, even though it is a copy of an original, because you have changed the medium and reproduced an image with great accuracy.
90% of the crap in this world that gets passed off as "art" can't hold a candle to the talent and mastery of a medium (even if it is digital, which is not a bad thing at all) that this painting displays.
My jaw was on the floor throughout that whole video. As someone who likes to think of themselves as being somewhat creative and artistically skilled, I really appreciate the work you put into this and the final product you came out with.

Wow. That's cool. Impressive display of mouse control! Hilarious that someone would write a cool article about what you did and people criticise it. Nice work.
there both sick pics but the background in the 1st photo has the more realistic affect....fair duce tho
Reading many of the comments I dont think some of the "its a photoshop" brigade can have bothered to watch the video. Shows plenty there to show its freehand.
absolutely amazing!!! anybody to say something negative shouldn't be privileged to be here... that was some serious work and it deserves respect!!!
god dam that is impressive. Watching the video and how it was mad, was just as cool as going over the finished digi-painting. Haters fawq off already, and go do something worthwhile with your time besides whining. If the artist doesnt already do this kind of thing for a living, he should be. Totally stoked now! going out to drift some corners into the snowbanks. fukit...
pretty amazing
it should be mandatory to watch the video before posting a comment. That would reduce the amount of ignorant comments from alleged "professionals"

It is amazing, but to me it seems pretty pointless to spend a 3rd of your day making something that looks basically exactly the same as the original photo. The man has got skills but if you ask me they're not going to get you very far in life unless it's your job.
neg prop me!

fair play mate, thats some serious talent goin down ther, jus wondering, do you use a pen and tablet or pure mouse control??
8 hours of work ???????? Man - have you ever opened your PS before ??????thatz so lame... looks like each part of the bike was cut from different pic and pasted into this one then... Come on people - you deserve to be shown much more than this !!!
well, might have spent 8 hrs on it but at least i post artwork I made not somebody else's (and mark it as "MayaCorps-Best-Pics"). I'm waiting for some of YOUR work. You can do it in your PS if you want..
mayacorps what the hell are you talking about. he clearly shows doing every single thing from scratch. Actually, I think 8hrs for something this involved is pretty good. I also want to know...what pen/tablet setup are you using?
I use really basic stuff: Corel photopaint 11, tablet is called Trust (but i don't trust it that much...) - it's on of them cheapish ones.
people, this isn't just photo editing, this is creating a whole new work.
skills? mad
obsessed? lol who knows
artistic? defs

you are the hero of my dreams, i have never seen sonething like this, this should be pod anyway, you are freekin awsome
8 hours to make a picture wich sort of looks like a picture taken in 0,08 seconds??!
I'd spend my time on my bike.

MAJOUR PROPS super sic man, scary amount of detail in there.
The kinda funny thing is though, you know there is like a funtion in photoshop that allows you to take a picture, and make it look like a painting.... lol
but seriously super sick, vid was a bit long, but well well worth it.

well that will be VOD soon just cuz its so bad ass, and yeah how you figured out how to do all that ,beyond me, i have so many things running through my head to ask you how did you do it..but i dont know where to begin, so....nice work man, you need to start a business where people can send you pics of them and you paint it up like that.
i think i got ideas from watching other people painting. Go on youtube and search for 'speed painting' there's some fantastic stuff there, much better than mine
Coolest video ever!!! It should be VOD. All my votes for VOD.
Dude, those are SKILLS... right onnnnn!!!

Haha well ciaffex, this is truly remarkable. I am blown away by the sheer skill you possess my friend. You have inspired me to try this for myself and see how I do, Im sure it will be no where near what you have created but its worth a shot! I am quite appalled by the amount of people on this website dishing out hate. If you have nothing nice to say or constructive to say about his work, then dont say it at all. If you have advice, give it, otherwise sit on your computer and dont comment under this photo, its really that simple. Again, great job dude, it is amazing! Keep this things coming and only great things will come of this.
I'm amazed something so complex can even be drawn, and to such a high standard that its fooled some people thinking its a photograph- Amazing.
On first glance its almost seamless.

so im thinking vod, i know its not someone out riding, but it is simply amazing, big props to ciaffez
If I were to create an oil painting from a photo reference, you wouldn't call it an edited photo. Really, this has nothing to do with photo editing at all.
I raise a frothy glass to Ciaffez's drive. But despite the aesthetic grandeur of the piece it still looks like a rendering that could have been done on Adobe Photoshop in about one to two hours. I'd be more impressed if he recreated the piece on an actual canvas using a medium like oil or acrylic paint.
After watching the video, it looks like he probably can.

not sure if this has been mentioned, the title "Photo Editing - How it's Done" is REALLY misleading. there was no editing of any photo, only drawing.

holy shit that was brutal just watching how much effort you put into it, let alone how painstakingly long and hard it would be to create a masterpiece like that. haha is this just a hobby on the side or a career cuz that is impressive

Brilliant work ciaffez. It's funny how so many of the commenters ask why you would copy a photograph rather than paint an original scene. My only response to this is: http://www.robertbateman.ca/
Different medium, same incredible skill.

That is amazing major props to the artist of that painting! I bet he could have gotten it much better if he spent a month on it! That is sick!
Painter x has an autopaint feature that takes all of the pain (and the art) out of the process, you still need to tweak the end results to make them your own but it can look good if you like that sort of thing... which I do btw.
I wish i could do it from scratch like that tho...damn.

I didn't want to believe it was a copy until I looked at the background. It looks amazing! I definitely wouldn't have the patience for that.
Amazing work! I remember seeing this a while ago and thinking it was a cool photo (I thought it was photo shopped but didn't care cuz it looked good). But now I know the truth. Major props to you ciaffez! Truly amazing work, don't let the smaller brained pink bike members get you down.

I was a graphic artist before I started teaching.
The guy who did this drawing is incredibly good. He would not need a computer to draw or paint a picture just as good, that is evidenced by his knowledge of masking and the less appreciated well thought out order in which he layed the color down.
All art is an elaborate rouse. A lot of times I show art-noobs how to create certain effects they tell me I am "cheating," as many noobs here have accused the artist of. The hardest way is not the right way to create any visual art, the most effective way is.
This artist shows talent on a multitude of artistic levels. I am sure his neigh-sayers can barely draw stick figures because anyone who has even attempted a drawing of this complexity would immediately recognize the talent behind it.

Astounding work! Thank you. I loved the Boxxer construction.
You people saying it was a waste of riding time should realise that there are people out there watching sport on TV that would think riding is a waste of TV time. You put your time where your passion is!
Anyway, how many members of a freeride/DH website can ride for 8 hours anyway? And, sorry, but resting on a lift for fifteen minutes between five minute runs is not 8 hours of riding!
I am equally astounded that that video inspired the haters. What does someone have to do to be hater free?
