Rachel Atherton wins BBC Midlands Sportswoman of the Year!

Posted: Dec 8, 2008

2008 womens World Mountain Bike champion Rachel Atherton beat stiff opposition last night to be named BBC Midlands Sportswoman of the Year. Rachel who was also nominated for 'Personality of the year' alongside brother Gee claimed the award in front of a star studded audience.

Rachel Atherton has won the prestigious BBC Midlands Sportswoman of the Year award. Her acceptance speech was 3 minutes 26 seconds long, which Atherton said was a personal best.

"I was really surprised at winning as it was such tough competition, but delighted and honored!" Commented the youngest of the Atherton family. The pair we're also quizzed on their thoughts on the sport becoming a Olympic discipline. "I'd love to see it in the Olympics, and it's quite a goal of my sister and me to get our sport more in the public eye." replied current mens World Champion Gee Atherton.

Also attending the BBC Sports personality of the year awards this Sunday, the Athertons continue to further the awareness of Downhill mountain biking within UK sport.

EVENTUALLY! Eventually mountain biking gets a mention in Sports Personality. This year we had 3 world champions. Is that really what it takes to get the sport noticed at a national level in the UK? The day after the Worlds, there was nothing on the radio, in the newspaper or on the tv about the British success in Italy 3 Golds, 2 Silvers, and nothing on the News. It's about time the BBC recognized Downhill in the Sports Personality. Last year Ruardih got not one mention, and was not even in the 'Britain's success throughout the year' video, when other crap sports such as curling got mentioned.
All I can say is, well done Gee, Rach, and Josh, for getting Downhill so recognised!

chill out guys. the sport is still on its way up.

it take a VERY long time for a sport to reach the "mainstream" level.

And if you know about it, and your happy with what your doing, why should you care if the media gives it less coverage than golf?

for that reason, Gold requires one ball, Mountainbiking requires 2!

flag bigburd (Dec 12, 2008 at 13:17)
well look at all the other profesional sports out there that take part in the olympics against the clock , they all wear lycra/skinsuits it makes sence at that level to me , but thanks to the UCI skin suits are now banned in DH , i thought it was a joke but its not , and the main reason for it being banned is to make it more 'fair' and alot to do with fashion and the fact that we ride in mostly baggy moto-x gear . to out siders to the sport that looks plain and simply unprofessional when compared to DH-ski , sprinting , time trail biking

Yes in the western world that's a lot of a surprise. However if it was Russia, Poland or any other country from the post(?)-soviet block that might have been sort of normal. Such an incident would mean that they were children of some influential member of the party. Look! In PL we just had twin brothers as the prime minister and the president! Thank God no one wanted to make some national day for those bastards! Might also happen in Italy, where some time ago some moto-trial son of the mob's grand father was surprisingly winning lots of competitions Wink
